Point Bonita lighthouse is one of three lighthouses marking the entrance to the Golden Gate, the most important trade route during the gold rush of the 19th century. The US coast guard still operates the lighthouse today and the National Park service gives visitors access. The lighthouse is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which boasts to be the largest urban National Park in the United States.
Many visitors miss the unique views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco from Kirby Cove. You can frame the city beneath the span of the Golden Gate Bridge, shoot the Bridge from a Beach and see the old fortifications.
Muir Woods National Monument is a protected ancient coast redwood forest. Many miles of trails and the promise of unspoiled nature attract large tourist crowds, to this old growth forest flocking here from nearby San Francisco. The park is easily accessible and offers many great opportunities for nature photography.
Sausalito and Tiburon are two upscale towns north of San Francisco with a distinct Mediterranean flair. Sausalito, protected by coastal hills, is a popular refuge from the fog that often engulfs San Francisco. Oceanfront dining and boutique shops cater to tourists in spending mood.
