How to photograph from Corona Heights Park

Corona Heights Park is the only place in San Francisco that offers a true 360 degree unobstructed vista. The former quarry does not show up in most guidebooks. Corona Heights is thus, mostly a local hang out spot and a dog’s playground.

The rocks are easy to climb, yet steep enough for superb unobstructed views. Randall Museum is located on the grounds of the park. It too has breathtaking views.

Corona Heights is the ideal place for scenic photography. Its views are less familiar than those of nearby Twin Peaks, yet often more spectacular.

Cholla Cactus Garden – Joshua Tree NP

Man-sized cacti in a beautiful mountainous landscape characterize the Cholla Cactus Garden in Joshua Tree National Park, a desert park full of life and wondrous shapes. The fascinating shape of these cacti and the large variety can yield stunningly beautiful photographs, yet not too many photographers find their way to this remote location just a couple of hours from Los Angeles.

Joshua Tree National Park is known for its namesake, the Joshua Tree, and for the fantastic rock climbing unique to the park. However, the cactus garden will present you with a good solid shooting opportunity that you should not miss.

How to photograph the California State Capitol

The California State Capitol is located in the heart of Sacramento, in a large landscaped park. It is the seat of California’s government, the location of bitter budget battles in the debt-ridden state, and the governor’s office, a position of power and humiliation. It is also a shining beacon of hope and endless optimism that fuels California since the gold rush, and a fantastic example of neoclassical architecture that dominates the administration buildings of the United States.

The California Capitol was indeed modeled after the US capitol in Washington D.C. Upon completion in 1870, its construction did cost the California taxpayers 25 times its original estimate. Splendor has created Sacramento’s most noteworthy attraction, adorned with public arts displays and antique furnishings. The California State Capitol is one of the most rewarding buildings to photograph.

How to photograph Capitola

Charming beach communities like Capitola are rare in Northern California. The city is famous for its laid-back atmosphere, surfers, and hip downtown bars at the water’s edge. Capitola is the perfect escape for busy Bay Area residents who slip out of their business suits for the weekend, partially envious of the aging surfing hippies that never sold out.

Fun in the sun, a beer at the beach on Zelda’s patio, the best slice of pizza you can get with sandy, naked feet, or a late night flirty Margarita at the Margaritaville, these are some of the simple pleasures Capitola has to offer. You will not have any trouble convincing your family members to join you for this trip.

The Santa Fe Depot in San Diego

Located between the glitzy glass-facades of Downtown’s high-rise buildings, the elegant Mission-Revival style Santa Fe Depot grants San Diego’s business district the grandeur of an era long gone. The Depot witnessed the rapid development and yet resisted change and persists to delight the traveler with its chic.

The Santa Fe Railroad constructed the original terminal during the great western railroad expansion of the second half of the 19th century. The current Depot is the second incarnation, capable of handling the increased traffic volume of the first decades of the 20th century. Today, the Santa Fe Depot still serves as the largest transportation hub of San Diego.

Obviously, such an iconic and history laden building invites photography. Visit this remarkable station at the heart of Downtown San Diego.

How to photograph the USS Midway

In active duty for nearly 50 years, the aircraft carrier USS Midway sailed to conflicts and participated in countless maneuvers around the world. Construction started in 1943. Upon completion in 1945, the USS Midway was the most advanced aircraft carrier in the fleet. She served until her decommissioning in 1992 and became a public museum in 2004. The USS Midway now anchors at the Navy Pier in San Diego, where you can visit and photograph the imposing ship.

With the superstructure towering nearly 70m above the port, and a crew of 4500, the USS Midway is a fully self-sufficient city at sea. She is the largest naval aviation museum, dominating the Navy Pier in Downtown San Diego.

How to photograph the Getty Center

Resting on a stunning hilltop in the Santa Monica Mountains, the Getty Center overlooks the vast city landscape of greater Los Angeles. Its exceptional contemporary architecture, colorful gardens and sweeping views are the main attraction for photographers. Meier, the architect, built almost the entire complex with travertine stone. It exerts a sterile, futuristic flair upon visitors as if it jumped straight from a science fiction novel.

The intricate interplay of light and shadows, shapes and architecture provide near limitless compositions. Photographers can get lost in the possibilities and strain the understanding of fellow travelers. Each place seems to change its character throughout the course of the day, making it impossible for you to leave.
